Work week blog May 6th

During the past week we have been working really hard to catch up to other people and some of that work includes doing mathematical calculations on what produces how much methane each animal produces and how factory's are working to produce methane. We are also deciding on what dishes we should place into our recipe book. So far we have decided on making an edamame recipe and we have also decided on making a cheese ball recipe for the appetizers. We will also be making a banana smoothie with out ice cream or any other dairy products. One other thing that we have decided upon is publishing our book on lulu. We think that lulu is very inexpensive and a good printing source. I personally like our project and am enjoying working on it. One problem we are having is deciding alternatives because we don't know any other food items that are similar to edamame. We were thinking of using edamame as an alternative for potato chips. We are also thinking of just adding meat to our original dishes for example we were going to make a beef casserole instead of a tuna casserole. I am glad we switched projects from videos to cooking.

Work week reflection

Today in class we received feedback from two groups. We received feedback from both Coke and brooks, and Nicole. Brooks told us to utilize more space and to also use the titles and bary them in size and color. He said of the dish is spicy we can change the color to read and have a sort of color coding system to our project. I liked this idea and want to change it to this before we present to everyone at the year end marketplace. Brooks also gave our group a wonderful suggestion about making more use of space by showing the individualized graphs for each section because right now our graphs are all over the place. Sadly our next partner looked through our book and continued to attack the group next to us on their design. The only piece of feedback that she gave was to add more pictures. Chaz and I gave coal's group a lot of feedback regarding their poster. We thought that they should change the words to be a lot more accurate for example instead of saying CO2 emitted they could say CO2 emitted per year. I enjoyed listening to Kody's presentation and told him to make the objective a little bit clearer.

Movie reflection

During last class period we watched a movie that was about the many different types of education systems out there. Some of the systems have been out there for the longest time ever since the industrial revolution. The industrial revolution was a period were people had to do the same average thing every day because there weren't that many diverse job opportunities. So the way that people are being taught and educated are preparing for the same type of work they did back then they are preparing for the steel ages and aren't helping kids prepare for a technologically advanced society were robots can beat people in games such as jeopardy and chess. One way to prepare kids for a job in the future is to make kids interact and do project based activities so that students prepare for the future. I am glad that I am in a program similar to high tech high because the statistics of students who graduate from that school and get accepted into collage is 98%. I fell that high tech high is a very innovative school that will Change education and persuade other schools to follow. I like the gear project that the students did.

2nd prototype

During today's class we were working on showing our class mates our second prototypes. We showed everyone our cook book and many people liked some of the dishes however many people were a little skeptical about the potato and asparagus dish. I am planing to make the dish later and give all of them a try to show that it does work. The dish itself is a little tangy and the asparagus balances it out. The dish is very simple and it can be made within 20-30 minutes. It's a good party dish and it tastes really delicious. Chaz and I also made edamame for the class and it is one of our dishes. Making the edamame was very easy however it took me two attempts to make it delicious. The first time I burned it a little and the second time I made it very spicy however the third time I made it taste very good. I enjoyed making the edamame. I received a lot of feedback and some of the most important pieces of feedback that I received was about changing the names from things such as potato asparagus to a cooler name. I also learned that I need more recipes.

Blog weekly

Halfway through this week I decided to change my topic for making informative videos to a pescitarian recipe book. We are going to have 6 appetizers 10 entrees 4 deserts and 2 drinks. This cook book is going to be able to help the environmental because it will be using animals and vegetables which means that it won't use as much methane gas (which is more harmful than CO2 to the environment) to destroy the environment. I like this idea because it will be combining some of my favorite things which include cooking and protecting the environment. So far we have both been able to create a combined 11 recipes. We have manly focused on entrees and appetizers. We will finish our book by next week Friday and have that as our prototype. I have enjoyed cooking the recipes and I've taste tasted 4 of those recipes. I like the way they taste and over the weekend I'll work on making many more recipes. I have worked on making more recipes today and I've written my about page. I have also emailed chef liong and asked him if he had any begin recipes that we could use. I'm glad we could switch topics.

April 11 work

During this week I had been very productive and accomplished many tasks one of those many tasks that I accomplished was finishing the write up of my script. I also finished the rest of my storyboards and research during these past few class periods. I was surprised to learn that an electric water heater uses more energy than any other appliance in a house. I also learned of many ways to reduce your electric bill for example the water heater is automatically set to the heist temperature and reducing it by 2 settings can reduce your bill by 10-15 dollars. I also learned about how good insulating the water heater is. I didn't know that insulating your hot water pipes could reduce your bill by 7 dollars on average per month. I was really surprised about this statistic. One more statistic I was surprised about was the cost of running and operating a TV. If you don't have a Samsung energy star TV than a large portion of your electric bill would be the cost that it takes to run the appliance. I was also able to create a rough model of my first video today. I think that it will be a lot better after I add special effects.

Some of the feedbac I received was to make only one video were it explains everything however I didn't think that this would be possible. I was also told to try and do a pool pump and how much electricity does that waits

Week of April 4th

During today's work day I did a little bit of research on light bulbs. I learned about all the different types of bulbs. Their was a catalog with a bunch of information on bulbs however if you click on a certain bulb it will tell you information about it. I learned that a CFL light bulb is incredibly shatter resistant that's why the poisonous property's of that light bulb stay inside of the bulb. I also learned that fluorescent light bulbs have the weakest frame so they have the largest potential to be the most harmful out of all the light bulbs. I also learned about a plastic coding that can be placed around bulbs to make the bulbs stronger and more resistant to breaking. I also shifted my focus from filming a video were I personally read out from a script to go animate. My partner and I felt that since we are doing educational videos we should use go animate. I worked on choosing a type of go animate video. we decided on common craft. For the future we will work on adding characters such as dale who will be the main educator in this series. We will also work on adding drawings such as light bulbs to the story.

Blog on day 1

During this class period I have been working on research for my first video. I was able to complete the research and I learned a few interesting things about light bulbs for example light bulbs are made out of many dangerous and harmful chemicals to your body even thought they may be very energy efficient. I was also able to storyboard out my first video and I plan to film it over the next weekend when I get my supplies ready. I have also divided up the work by videos. Chaz was able to do the easy bib page and I joined it as well. We created and updated our giant chart as well.

During the next class we are going to storyboard out the next two videos. Our next two videos are about vampire devices and making a sustainability garden. We have done a lot of research on vampire devices and I have also done a lot of research on the plants we should grow in our

Garden. I have chosen to grow tomatoes, onions, and other vegetables. I have also chosen to do a longer video on vampire devices because we feel that they are very important to establishing a energy efficient house.

This week in MPX

For the last couple of weeks in MPX for joint periods we have been working on electric bikes and physics videos. In STEM we have been working on math and in Humanity's we are working on our dystopia project. The thing that I am favoring most in MPX is currently our work on electric bikes. I find working on electric bikes to be very difficult and that is why I enjoy it. In the other MPX classes we have worked on solving math questions and in English we are working on coding as well as programming for a text adventure game. I am really enjoying the bike because building it is very difficult and there are many aspects that make it a lot of fun. I have had a lot of fun in MPX however it is very difficult and there are many projects going around.

The most difficult item I did this week was cutting the motor plate. I learned this week was how to cut the metal motor mounting plate. It was very difficult to cut the metal piece however when we got a new sawing bit it became really easy. I then had to grind down the metal piece because it had many small shrapnel pieces sticking out of it. I fixed it and it stuck on the bike. It stuck on the bike really well. I was beginning to get nervous and wondering if it wouldn't work. I was really scared because if it couldn't work than our year long project was pretty much over however we found that cutting it would be a viable solution.

Field trip to PAN Star research center

In the last class period we visited the astrology center near our school and it was incredibly interesting. I enjoyed looking at all the lenses that they were building and hope to get an internship there looking for meteorites in the night sky. When we began our field trip I thought that it was going to be about stars constellations and just a long talk and a power point presentation about the night sky however it became a lot more interesting. We were allowed to visit the labs and see how they were built which was interesting.

One of the three things that I took away from the field trip is the true dangers and the possible damage of a meteorite strike on the earth. I didn't know that most of the damage caused by a meteorite that has crashed on earth is actually caused by the shock wave that occurs after the meteorite hit the earth.

The second take away that I received from the field trip is that at a work shop everything for the high powered telescope is created by hand and it is individualized. I saw the mechanic at the work shop working on a modified L-bracket and it was a very tiny piece.

Another take away that I received from the last field trip was that nasa uses about a million dollars on an individual camera. The camera had gold in the lenses which makes it cost so much. I had no idea that it costs so much money to send up a camera into outer space.

TED talks

In the last few classes for STEM we have been working on watching TED talks and I have really enjoyed the very informational Ted talks rather than the emotional ones. The TED talks that we watched was called batteries from dirt, plastic to paper, how do solar cells work, and James Hanson on climate change. I liked all of them however James Hansons TED talk was a little bit boring in my opinion because it was constant talking and it was a big information dump. Unlike the talk about solar cells which was short concise and to the point.

My favorite and most impactful TED talk was the one that talked about solar cells. Even though this was a very short video it got me intrigued in this topic. I began to think and wonder if we were to convert all of our energy into solar cells that could be a good solution to the issue of climate change. Even thought this topic intrigued me I couldn't help but wonder how much it would cost to make this world powered by solar energy. In a single solar panel there are many scientific principles and I really enjoyed watching this video. This video impacted me the most because now I believe that the solution to climate change will be solar power.

I was impacted by the solar cells talk because it gave me hope that there is a solution that is possible and that we have the ability now to solve this problem. I am now wondering why we aren't already trying to solve this problem now.

Climate Change

Recently in class we have been working on climate change and we saw a movie that was created by the ciera club about climate change and how drilling for oil is affecting community's and people who live in those areas. I was inspired by the residents who are living in the area where they have been drilling for oil and what they have to do in order to get attention. I don't think that it's fair that the oil companies are allowed to take away people's livelihood After watching the video I began to think and thought that the movie did a good job at going after people's emotions however I would have of liked it more if they talked a little bit more about the science of climate change and possible solutions for oil companies.

Two things that I learned about climate change is that they are freely taking others land and using it for oil. The second thing I learned was how India fought agents oil and won.

PIP

My first idea for a personal interest project is to build a skateboard with a chargeable solar powered mortar. I would really like to do this project and you can incorporate a lot of math with the speed and battery storage. Setting up the solar panel also takes engineering.

My second idea for the personal interest project would be creating a test to see what types of energy so are able to create electricity better by comparing solar energy and wind energy.

My third idea for a personal interest project would be trying to create a way to create an iPad solar power charger.
